SAINT LOUIS, MO

The leader of the Roman Catholic Church, Pope Francis, passed away at the age of 88. Jorge Mario Bergoglio, a deeply religious child was born in 1936 to immigrant parents from Italy. Due to his religious inclination and intellect, he was elected as a pope on March 13, 2013, and was the first pope from the Americas. Pope chaired the Catholic Church for more than a decade. In recent years, he had suffered a bunch of health complications and was growing quite frail prior to passing. He suffered double pneumonia this year; however, the reason for his demise is said to be a cardiac arrest and stroke. On Sunday, he made his first extended public appearance after getting discharged from hospital after a 38-day stay. This made his death come as a shock as he appeared in St. Peter's Square to receive cheering crowds on Easter Sunday, suggesting that his recovery is going well. In an Easter Sunday message read aloud by an aide as the pope looked on from the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica, the pontiff had repeated his call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. Throughout his papacy, he was known for his support for the plight of the impoverished, migrants, and refugees. Francis reigned over an era of massive changes within the global Catholic order. Indeed, his passing is a huge loss to the world.
