Jim Dent
May 08, 1939 - May 01, 2025
Augusta, GA
A pioneering Black golfer, Jim Dent, tragically passed away at 85. He became a pro golfer who broke through to the PGA in the times when Black golfers were often unwelcome and thus rare. The reason for his unfortunate demise is reported to be due to complications from a stroke. He grew up near the famous Augusta Country Club, home of the Masters Tournament. Even though he had an interest in golf, he wasn't allowed to play there, as it was a club for the whites. However, he joined as a caddy at Augusta National and stayed loyal to his role even at the Masters at the age of 15. Upon hitting his 20s, he started to pursue his passion of being a pro golfer, achieving the feat in 1966 and then making the PGA Tour four years later. In his 450 career starts, he had 25 top-10 finishes. Moreover, he also earned his tour card 16 years in a row and played in six PGA championships and five U.S. opens. During the 1990 season, Jim was dominant on the Senior Tour, including winning four tournaments. He was inducted into many Hall of Fame, including the African American Golfers Hall of Fame, the Georgia Golf, Caddie, Georgia Sports, Paine College Sports, and the National Black Golf Hall of Fame. To honor his brilliance, the road leading to the course at Augusta was named after him, "Jim Dent Way." Indeed, his passing marks a huge loss in the realm of golf and its overall history.
