"Dexter Scott King, the son of Martin and Coretta Scott King, was born on January 30th, 1961, in Atlanta, Georgia. Sadly, Dexter passed away on January 22nd, 2024, at his home in Malibu, California, after battling prostate cancer. Named after his father's first pastorate church, Dexter grew up witnessing his father's tireless dedication to civil rights. Attending Morehouse College, Dexter studied business administration before taking on significant roles in preserving his father's legacy. In 2005, he became chairman, president, and CEO of the King Center, where he aimed to spread his father's message of nonviolence globally. Dexter also delved into media and entertainment, producing films, records, and television specials on the civil rights movement. His animated film ""Our Friend Martin"" received an Emmy nomination. He penned the memoir ""Growing Up King"" in 2003. Recognized for his influence, Dexter appeared in Ebony magazine's ""100 Most Influential Black Americans"" lists and made appearances on various talk shows. Despite his prominence, Dexter remained humble and committed to justice. In 1997, he publicly expressed doubt about James Earl Ray's role as his father's killer after meeting with him.
